Every Halloween, Tom Saltsman conceptualizes and creates a large-scale multimedia installation to give back and delight the local community.
These special projects are made primarily from discarded job site materials, found objects, and custom parts and assemblies.

The special projects conceived by Tom 19 years ago at his childrens' elementary school’s MONSTER MASH - transforming the hallway and building exterior into a custom visual and audio experience. The excitement signaled the beginning of the yearly event. The installations have since moved from the elementary school to the local museum and now, Tom’s garage and driveway.
Tom begins formulating the design ideas in August, tapping into his lighting, theater design, architecture, art, and electronic programming skills. Planning and iterating start in early September through models and sketches. Each installation includes an interior and exterior correlating component. Construction commences in mid-September, culminating in a public opening on Halloween. The ideas are kept under wraps until the reveal.
The installations have been featured locally in the Boston Globe, WBUR, CBS Boston, Boston 25 News: and abroad in China’s news feed highlighting the Dragon. Documentaries have featured Tom’s work.
The event has become a staple for the Marblehead community, delighting all ages. “The installations are part of my kid’s childhood, and we are grateful for Tom’s efforts”, said one resident. Children walk by and recount the themes, “Spaceship, dragon, ghost ship, gorilla, walking man, Egyptian goddess” and wonder what is next.
Stay tuned…you never know what may appear.
